Reflection

Sometimes you don’t notice how special people are until you are given the opportunity to see them in action. Since my Grandaddy died in April, I have been thinking about him, but I have also been reflecting on how special my Granny is.

While Granny is not my biological grandmother, she is the only paternal grandmother I have ever known. It isn’t until my grandaddy got sick, that I realized how truly special she is. In the end he required constant care, and although she grew weary and at times felt like she was losing it, she took excellent care of him. I say all this to say, that seeing her take care of him showed me love in a new light. It wasn’t the romanticized love that we see in Hollywood, there was nothing glamorous about it. It was love in action. I think all too often love is expressed through words, gifts or hugs. While all of those things are important, by watching my Granny I have learned that the most special kind of love, and perhaps the greatest kind of love is the love that gives unselfishly for another.

I hate that my grandaddy had to get sick, but it was through that experience that I was able to see what I can only describe as the godly picture of how a wife should love her husband. I fail every day, but watching Granny and thinking back on it is challenging me to love Drew in that way, unselfishly and with compassion.
