How to Shabby Chic Chalkboard

My sister and I went thrifting and came across this $2 mirror. I have been wanting to make a chalkboard and I thought this little number might just be the ticket to a cheap one. I started by sanding the frame and scratching the mirror with sandpaper so that the spray paint would adhere…

 

After sanding I sprayed the frame white, I didn’t tape off the mirror portion but rather just sprayed. After the white paint dried I taped off the frame like this…

 

After taping off the frame I sprayed the chalkboard spray paint. I had to do about 3 coats of this because of the mirrored surface.

I had a bit of trouble keeping the chalkboard paint off of the frame so that is the reason I decided to go shabby chic. I ended up sanding some of the frame so that the original black showed through.

   I finished the chalkboard by adding some vinyl letters. And VOILA!

So over that high school thing…

Tonight I went to a high school graduation. Each time I take part in this ritual I am transported back to the night I graduated high school and how I felt like it was the end of the world. Thinking back on it I was absolutely crazy. I hear people talk about all these awesome experiences in high school and how those were the best days of their life, and I am amazed that I feel the complete opposite. Yes, I did have some fun times and I met some great people, and at the time I felt like the memories I was making would last forever, but looking back those moments weren’t that significant in the whole grand scheme of my life. I did have moments of clarity, moments that shaped me into the woman I am today, but I realize that the most important moments of my life happened after high school and much of what I have learned about life came after I left those hallowed halls. I have learned what real love is, what it means to put the needs of others above my own, and what matters most in life. I do have a few memories of high school and when we get together and reminisce more memories come flooding back. I am amazed that the times I think back on and feel so fondly about are the memories I have made with Drew after high school and not the memories of Friday night football games or even hanging out in the hallways at school. Kids think that high school will define who they become and for many people it will. I on the other hand would like to think that the moments and events after high school made me who I am today. That the things that happened after I left East Memorial Christian Academy taught me who I should be. I thought leaving high school would make me lose who I was, but instead it made me discover who I was, it gave me confidence and strength that I never knew I had. I think being sheltered and in that bubble that high school was, made me comfortable, but it didn’t make me grow. But like I said before even though I am so glad I am out of high school, there are still people from high school that I love and hope will always be a part of my life even when the memories are long gone. Here are a few of those folks:

Here is the lemonade pitcher I was working on this afternoon. I am pretty pleased with the way it turned out. Lemonade is my favorite summer beverage and I can’t wait to put this lovely creation to work. Hey if this whole selling crafts thing doesn’t work out, I might just start myself a lemonade stand.

So as I told you in my last blog I have been in all out craft mode. Here are a few things I did this week…

I also have started working on a chalkboard out of a mirror I got at the flea market. Once I have finished I plan on doing my first tutorial so you too can make one. At this very moment I am cutting some vinyl for a lemonade pitcher. I think it is going to be lovely and I will most definitely be showing it off as soon as it is done.

I mentioned on Monday that I am considering doing a giveaway…it is coming peeps and it is going to require that you follow me. Craftapalooza

Ok so I realize I haven't been as faithful in my blogging as I sometimes am, but I have been in all out craft mode. I go through stages where all I want to do is write or read, then I get in an all out domestic mode and go all crazy in the kitchen, currently all I want to do is craft. I think this sudden onset has been brought on by the freedom of a break from school, but no matter what brought on this feeling my house looks like Hobby Lobby threw up in it. There are rolls of yarn here, a glue gun there, a Cricut cutting machine IN MY LIVING ROOM!!! (who am I?) I am so thankful that my sweet husband is so laid back otherwise my current frenzy might push him over the edge.
So what have I been doing you might ask. A little bit of everything. I am still trying to finish crocheting that blanket I told you about. It is a little over half-way done and turning out quite nicely if I do say so myself. I have been doing some things with my cricut and vinyl. I also have been working on another wreath. Today is Mother’s Day, and in the area of mothers and women that we celebrate on this day I have been abundantly blessed. First and foremost the woman who gave me life. My mom is an amazing woman, always helping others and never meeting a stranger. My mom is the kind of person who will go out of her way to talk to people, because everyone deserves a friend. Whether it be a family member, person on her mail route or just a random person she meets in the bathroom; my mom can always strike up an conversation and make anyone feel valued and of worth.

 

I can’t think about mothers without thinking of my grandmother. Although she isn’t with us anymore my grandmother along with my mother influenced who I am today. She was an exceptional woman who loved God, her family and music. She spent over 50 years of her life teaching children to read. I considered her one of my best friends, full of wisdom and love for her “little darling.” Now that I am married I think I miss her more than ever and I have so many things that I wish I could ask her or talk about with her, but I know where she is and I wouldn’t want her to leave there for anything.

Lastly I have been blessed immensely to have an amazing mother in law. Some people dread visiting or getting visits from their mother in law, but I look forward to and enjoy both of these things. Drew’s mom has taken me in like I am her own daughter, and we have so much in common that the transition into the family has been so easy for me. I never felt uncomfortable or unwanted, and that was due in large part to her.

I feel overwhelmingly blessed to have an amazing mother and mother in law and to have had a precious grandmother. God blessed me so much and on this day and everyday I can’t help but feel increasingly thankful for these women in my life.
